How do you choose a breast surgeon in Korea?
Start with the named operating surgeon, rather than the clinic brand alone. Ask about relevant qualifications, experience with your proposed operation and who provides anaesthesia and follow-up. Review comparable cases and the explanation of alternatives and risks. A directory entry, society membership or paid clinic placement is not an independent quality rating.
Meet your surgeon.
Understand your care.
Ask who will perform each part of your care
Request the operating surgeon’s full name and specialist qualifications. Ask whether the same surgeon will conduct your consultation and postoperative reviews. A directory listing or a clinic team portrait does not establish which doctor will perform your procedure. Confirm the plan directly before signing consent.
Look for experience relevant to your situation
Ask about experience with your proposed operation and similar anatomy. Primary augmentation, fat transfer, breast lift and revision require different decisions. For a revision, bring information about previous devices, operations and complications. Ask how the surgeon would adapt the plan if findings during surgery differ from the initial assessment.
Review comparable cases thoughtfully
Request consented before-and-after images from the proposed surgeon. Useful comparisons have similar starting anatomy, lighting, posture and follow-up intervals. Ask when the after photograph was taken and what happened during recovery. Selected photographs cannot show every possible outcome or establish a complication rate.
Evaluate the consultation itself
A useful consultation explains what is possible, what is uncertain and what the surgeon advises against. You should be able to ask about risks, scars, alternatives and future surgery. If you need an interpreter, ask whether one will be present during the consent discussion as well as the sales conversation.
Compare the care pathway
Ask who answers after-hours concerns, whether follow-up is in person or remote, what documents you receive and how care continues after you leave Korea. Request the complication and revision policy in writing. Choose only after you can explain the proposed plan and its trade-offs in your own words.
Know which questions belong to which team member.
A well-organised consultation may involve several people. Their roles are different. It is reasonable to ask for the clinical explanation directly from the responsible clinician, with interpretation when needed, and to keep the practical arrangements in writing.
| Team member | Topics to clarify |
|---|---|
| Operating surgeon | Suitability, technique, alternatives, limits, risks and follow-up responsibilities. |
| Anaesthesia clinician | Medical history relevant to anaesthesia, monitoring and perioperative arrangements. |
| Nursing or recovery team | Discharge instructions, practical wound-care questions and escalation routes. |
| Coordinator or interpreter | Appointments, documents, language support and how to reach the clinicians. |
| Billing team | The itemised quote, payment terms and administrative policies. |
Review a doctor’s profile for the role it actually describes. A dermatologist, family-medicine clinician, orthodontist or anaesthesiologist may be part of a large clinic without being the surgeon who performs augmentation. Similarly, a plastic-surgery qualification does not establish experience with every operation. Ask for relevant credentials and a clear account of the proposed surgeon’s role. If the operating surgeon changes, request a new discussion before agreeing to the plan.
